The Civil Rights Movement was a struggle for all African Americans in the early 1950’s and late 1960’s. They fought for freedom, civil rights, and equality. With time, there were many Americans to help follow through for their freedom, such as Martin Luther King Jr. King contributed to the Civil Rights Movement in many ways. He contributed by providing leadership in the Montgomery bus boycott, being an advocate for non-violent protesting, and lastly announcing his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. These contributions positively impacted society and helped gain African American civil rights.Martin Luther King Jr. was an African American Baptist minister and social activist. On December 1, 1955, a woman named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus for a white male. Because of her refusal, she was then arrested. The night she was arrested, King and other civil rights leaders came together and planned a citywide bus boycott. This was one way of King’s idea to show that discrimination should be abolished. He also decided to continue the boycott until the city met its demands. This movement brought many African Americans together, and although this boycott did not end segregation, it was only the beginning of what would come next.Secondly, Martin Luther King Jr. was against using violence to acquire equal rights. He encouraged all African Americans to fight for their rights in a peaceful manner. He believed that violence did not solve anything. King once said, “Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers.” He preaches this by stating that if we used violence, matters could have been worse. He doesn’t want to risk the chances of someone getting hurt whether its a friend of his or a complete stranger. So even though it may take time and patients without violence, it definitely helped in the long run.Lastly, in 1963, King held an event in which more than 250,000 people participated in. He made a speech that brought attention to millions of people across the world including whites, blacks, Native Americans and so on. The main purpose of his speech was to tell the audience that no one should be treated differently, whether the color of their skin or the color of their eyes. In his speech, he repeats the phrase, “we can never be satisfied…” implying that until the colored people had their freedom and rights, nothing would make them content. As for that he also repeats the phrase, “I have a dream…” to show that he believes that one day everything will change and there would be equality. This speech gave the biggest impact on the Civil Rights Movement. With the patients of many, Martin Luther King Jr. made history. We are all human beings and deserve the rights of any other person living on this earth.
