Pranav Ramasubramanian English 21B1-18-2018      Social media is something that grows because of the amount of people that use it on a daily basis all over the world. It helps marketers get more attention and more clicks on their website or product. In many cases, this means more money will be generated for that company. Social media provides a distraction for students as they spend more than two hours on it, rather than opening up their book and studying for class. When utilized properly, social media becomes a strength and can be used for communication, helping people gather information and even helping with homework from time to time. Social media has a big influence in society, but it doesn’t have the appropriate one and people can survive without it.     Social media causes a new form of bullying, cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is when bullies use technology like their phones or computer to use social media as their platform to harass, threaten, or target another person. This occurs with young teenagers and with adults it’s called cyber-harassment or cyberstalking. According to a study done by California State University, Chico, “4,400 deaths per year, at least 100 young people attempt suicide, and 14 percent of high school students considered suicide, and 7 percent have attempted it.” Girls are more likely to be cyberbullied in their lifetime, but the gap is only a mere six percent higher than boys at 36.7 and 30.5 for boys, but boys are more likely to report it happening in their lifetime. This affects physical and mental health as younger people become more depressed and it also affects sleeping and eating, low self-esteem, poor grades, with more drug and alcohol use.     Another problem with social media is that elementary and high schoolers are starting to lack social skills and face to face conversations or meetings. Adults don’t have quite the same problem with this because they lived in an era when technology wasn’t this developed or innovative. However in a study done by Yazino, an online social casino, it was showed that 11 percent of adults would rather stay at home and communicate on social media. Rachel Ehmke states, teens engaged themselves by being with friends, experimenting, and trying out skills whether they succeeded or failed in tiny real-time interactions, while elementary and high schoolers miss out on by being attached to their screens. She also says,  “In a way, texting and online communicating-it’s not like it creates a nonverbal listening disability, but it puts everybody in a nonverbal disabled context, where body language, facial expression, and even the smallest kinds of vocal reactions are rendered invisible.” Young people in a elementary school or high school setting need breaks to regroup and chill, but with social media, the conversation just keeps going leading to anxiety when talking face to face.     Sleep is something everybody needs to function to keep their body healthy for days and years to come, and social media makes it harder for people to close their eyes at night. On a nightly basis about every one in five young people wake up in the middle of the night to send or check messages. The young people who do this end up being more tired and less happy because of the lack of sleep. A clinical psychologist, Dr. Jessica Levenson states, ” Social media could affect sleep because of the light emitted from the screen, because the content is emotionally engaging or because people just get caught up doing it and go to bed later- or it could be a combination of all three. ” She was also part of a study done at Pittsburgh in 2016 with 1788 young adult participants about social media and how it disturbs sleep among 19-32 year olds. She also reported that more than half of young adults from 19-32 experienced high levels of sleep disturbance from social media usage. Sleep helps sharpen attention so younger people and older people pay attention in class better or do your day job with more efficiency.     Social media isn’t all bad and is actually used for beneficial tasks that make jobs easier. It makes daily communication between family, friends and business partners all the more easier to do. It helps strangers meet for the first time and establish initial communication. If a person does happen to get cyberbullied, common with young people, the person can simply just block them or take a screenshot and show it to someone to make it stop before things get out of hand. It helps to build a professional network or find a job via LinkedIn. People can reach out to companies, with mutual interest, via Twitter. People can use Matchmaking, and Tinder to open up and share personalities with other people to make more connections. Social media helps create awareness culturally and politically with important information on the issues that happens worldwide affecting lives in hopes of turning people into socially responsible citizens.     Social media has its shares of positives, but the negatives and risks overshadow it in the big picture. It ruins sleep at night by light and constant beeping which affects your daily performance in school. People who used to pick on children at school can now go on social media and send people even more meaner messages making one doubt themselves and develop low self-esteem. When a person spends too much time on a screen, they tend to forget how to engage in face to face conversations or meetings, and this causes poor relationships and major social anxiety leading into adulthood. Although a good solution to all these problems are viable, people will feel overwhelmed and won’t seek them.
